This premise, seemingly simple, has a profound impact on the quality of learning and the well-being of the student. <br\/><\/p>\n\n<p><strong>What does &#8220;progress at their own pace&#8221; imply?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p>It means that the learning process adapts to the student\u2019s actual stage of development. When a child needs more time to consolidate a skill, they are given that time. If they\u2019re ready to move on, they\u2019re allowed to do so, even if the group hasn\u2019t yet. Deep and lasting learning<br\/><br\/>When content is introduced at the right moment in a child\u2019s development, understanding is deeper and more meaningful. This prevents the so-called \u201clearning gaps\u201d that hinder future progress (Bransford, Brown, &amp; Cocking, 2000). <\/p>\n\n<p>2. Reduced stress and frustration<br\/><br\/>Forcing a child to move ahead before they\u2019re ready or to repeat what they already know can cause anxiety, boredom, and demotivation. Adapting the pace improves their emotional well-being and connection with school (Immordino-Yang &amp; Damasio, 2007). <br\/><br\/><br\/>3. Strengthening academic self-esteem<br\/><br\/>Progressing at their own pace allows children to experience success, strengthen their self-confidence, and see themselves as capable, which translates into a more positive attitude toward learning (Bandura, 1997).<\/p>\n\n<p>4. Development of autonomy and responsibility<br\/><br\/>This approach encourages students to understand themselves as learners, regulate their own process, and make decisions. These are key competencies for the 21st century (Zimmerman, 2002; OECD, 2018). <br\/><br\/><\/p>\n\n<p><strong>What does neuroscience say?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p>Studies in neuroeducation have shown that learning is more effective when it respects individual rhythms and adjusts to the natural variability of brain development (Tokuhama-Espinosa, 2010).
